Williams sisters knocked out of doubles at US Open by Czech duo
According to reports, the Williams sisters’ final match as a team could have been played on Thursday. With scores of 7-6(5) and 6-4, the Czech duo advanced to the second round.
The 14-time doubles and 23 grand slam singles and winner is still scheduled to face Ajla Tomljanovi of Australia in the third round of the singles event on Friday. Venus Williams was knocked out in the first round on Tuesday.
In an on-court interview seconds after the match, Hradecká expressed her joy and sadness at the triumph to the 23,000-plus spectators. It was her first time playing doubles alongside Nosková.
The Williams combination got off to a good start, leading 5-4 in the first set, but the Czechs battled back. In the tiebreaker, Nosková and Hradecká again trailed but won the final four points.
In the second set, they seemed to have a comfortable lead, but Serena and Venus were able to win three straight games to square it up. However, the Czechs maintained service to go up 5-4, then broke Serena in the last game, with Hradecká sending a backhand at the net in between the sisters for the match-winning backhand.
