Assam doesn’t want to set up PSUs anymore, says Himanta Biswa Sarma

Sarma while speaking in the state assembly on Monday said, “We do not want to set up industry in the public sector and rather concentrate on education, health and Anganwadi centres. There is no point in depriving people from roads, education and bridges and investing in loss-making public-sector units.”

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the government does not subscribe to socialism and public sector industry was the concept of the socialist movement. Sarma said that he does not believe in the ideology of Karl Mark, Lenin and Stalin.

Sarma while speaking in the state assembly on Monday said, “We do not want to set up industry in the public sector and rather concentrate on education, health and Anganwadi centres. There is no point in depriving people from roads, education and bridges and investing in loss-making public-sector units.”

Adding that he wants investment from the private sector in industry, he said, “Government must control law and order, education, health and police. Government incurred losses in running industrial units and peoples’ problems became a human problem owing to repeated losses. We have no intention to run the industry because we are not industrialists.”

Sarma said, “Already government of India has moved away from a mixed economy. We do not subscribe to socialism and the public sector industry was a concept of socialist movement. Why will we set up an industry? Setting up an industry entails investment of Rs 100 Crore and gain incur loss of Rs 60 Crore and there will be agitation. Instead of this we will set up a medical college with an investment of Rs 200 Crore or build an over bridge. Efficiency is not associated with setting up industry. There are people who will set up industry and there are policies for the same.”

Leader of opposition in assembly and Congress MLA, Debabrata Saikia said that the word socialism is a part of Constitution and there is no amendment yet so how can the government say that it will not follow socialist pattern.

Sarma said, “Prime minister Indira Gandhi included socialism. There is a difference between socialism and socialist. We do not subscribe to the ideology of Karl Marx, Lenin and Stalin and we will not accept them.”

Independent MLA Akhil Gogoi raised the question that out of 41 public sector units as many as 20 are closed and he wanted to know if the government has plans to revitalise the same.
